Science

Intent

At Christ Church Primary School, our intent is to ignite a lifelong passion for scientific exploration and discovery in every young mind. We are dedicated to fostering a dynamic learning environment where curiosity thrives, critical thinking flourishes, and creativity knows no bounds.

Our primary aim is to provide pupils with a solid foundation in scientific principles while nurturing their innate curiosity about the world around them. Through hands-on experiments, interactive activities, and engaging lessons, we aim to make Science come alive for our pupils, allowing them to experience the joy of discovery first-hand.

At Christ Church Primary School, we believe that every child has the potential to become a scientist, and it is our mission to inspire and equip them with the knowledge, skills, and curiosity they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and leaders who will make meaningful contributions to society through their understanding and appreciation of Science. We promote cross curricular links and allow children to fall in love with multiple subjects seeing the links, knowing they may embark on interconnected themes in further education if they wish to.

Implementation

At Christ Church we use the CUSP Science Scheme to deliver a broad, creative and inclusive curriculum for all children which is based on the knowledge and skills as defined in the Science National Curriculum. By implementing our Science Curriculum with a focus on the spiral curriculum approach, we are dedicated to ensuring that fundamental scientific concepts are not only learned but also deeply ingrained in pupils’ long-term memory. Ambitious Tier 2 and Tier 3 scientific vocabulary is systematically taught and reinforced throughout our curriculum.

We believe in fostering learning experiences that actively engage pupils with scientific principles. Through hands-on experiments, investigations, and interactive demonstrations, pupils are encouraged to explore, question, and apply their scientific knowledge, fostering deeper comprehension and retention.

Each exposure to a scientific concept serves as an opportunity for reinforcement and review. By revisiting these concepts in varied contexts and with increasing complexity, we aim to solidify pupils’ understanding and appreciation of scientific principles. The structure of our curriculum enables pupils to develop their scientific skills with growing autonomy, cultivating a mindset of continuous learning and discovery.

Regular formative assessments, including practical demonstrations and quizzes, are integrated into our curriculum to evaluate pupils’ grasp of key scientific concepts. These assessments facilitate timely intervention and tailored support, while also identifying areas for further development.

Impact

At Christ Church, we uphold high expectations for academic achievement, and our Science Curriculum is designed to demonstrate clear progression. As pupils advance through the school, they cultivate lifelong scientific skills and acquire a profound understanding of the natural world, gaining a sense of curiosity and inquiry. They emerge as informed global citizens, equipped with a sense of responsibility towards environmental stewardship and a nuanced understanding of scientific inquiry.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through various methods, including:

  • Assessing pupil’s mastery of theme-linked scientific vocabulary within each unit of study.
  • Evaluation of pupil-led discussions about scientific concepts and discoveries.
  • Formative quizzes and practical assessments.
  • Pupil feedback and reflections on their learning experiences.
  • Annual reports detailing standards and achievements across the science curriculum.

Children at Christ Church will:

  • Be able to articulate their understanding of scientific concepts and be able to reason scientifically using rich language linked to Science.
  • Demonstrate a high love of mathematical skills through their work, organising, recording and interpreting results.
  • Work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.
  • Demonstrate a love of Science and express an interest in further study or work in this field
  • Be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.
